1973 born in Lower Bavaria.

1995 – 2001 theatre and film science, German and art history studies in Erlangen and Munich

After several short films he directed his feature film debut “Blöde Mütze!” in 2006. The film premiered at Berlinale 2007 and won national and international awards. In 2010 he finished his second feature film, the German-Polish co-production  “Wintertochter”, which was awarded the German Film Award for Best Childrens Film 2012. In 2015 he directed the drama “Agnes” based on the novel of the same name by Peter Stamm, 2022 followed “Tales of Franz”, a children film based on the stories by Christine Nöstlinger.

Johannes Schmid also directs theatre, music theatre and opera everywhere in Europe, i.a. at Bayerische Staatsschauspiel, Stadsteater Malmö, Deutsche Oper upon Rhein in Duesseldorf, Salzburger Festspiele, Teatro alla Scala in Mailand, Theater Stankt Gallen, Theater Konstanz and Schauburg Munich.

Since 2000 Johannes Schmid is working as free-lance director for theatre und film.
He lives in Munich and Stockholm.
